Learning Express Library

Advanced Challenge
1. I would start with the 4th Grade Reading Skills Improvement options in the Elementary section of Learning Centers. There are several practice tests for 4th grade reading.

2. I would have her look at the Skill Building for Adult section first.  In additon I would point out

3. There are several e-books that talk about careers. One way to get them is to click on Jobs and Careers, then select Nursing and Allied Health. One of the Career Guidance options is "Becoming a Nurse." There are also practice tests for pharmacy and nursing which might give the student an idea of the things a person in that field should know. The section on Job Search & Workplace Skills might also be helpful.

Common Core Connections

The practice test I took, was fun.  It was a grammer and puncuation test and I did horribly, but it was still fun.

The e-book "Between the Lines" is about Document Based Questions (DBQs) and analyzing primary documents. There are some lessons in the e-book that outline how to write an essay using DBQs. Students would analyze editorial cartoons published durning the Revolutionary War. Then they would write an essay pointing out the central ideas based on details in the cartoons.

The standard is CC11-12RH/SS2 "Determine the central ideas of information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary that makes clear the relationships among the key details and ideas.

Worldbook

Basic Challenge
1 and 2: Worldbook KIDS has less information about my mamal (otter) than Worldbook student.  And the information was more complex on the Worldbook student edition.

3. The subsections on Recreation and Food section would be helpful for our Food and Culture classes. 

4. A student could translate the information to to other languages.  It also has lots of pictures that give clues about the information.

Advanced Challenge
1. Students could use the Games and Activities section to review math tables or sentence structure. And the games make learning fun.

2. Students would use the Compare Places activity under the Explore section. The comparison table was great!

3. The Back in Time articles and the Primary sources for Huckleberry Finn book, are great for contextual information about that time in America and to learn more about Mark Twain.

4.The How to Do Research section would help teachers or librarians to create meaningful research projects.  The Worldbook explains Videos would be good for short presentations or embedding in research projects.

Common Core Challenge
SD.9-12.US
Core High School U.S. History: Students will understand the emergence and development of civilizations and cultures within the United States over time and place. Evaluate the influence/impact of various cultures, values, philosophies, and religions on the development of the U.S. (Application) Students are able to describe the causes and effects of cultural, economic, religious, political, and social reform movements on the development of the U.S.

High School:
The assignment is for groups of students to present cultural differences between the North and the South during the Civil War. Specific topics include "what was the point of view of people involved?" (primary sources), "how did the economies of the North and South influence the war?" and "how did religious beliefs influence anti-slavery and pro-slavery sentiments?". The presentation would include, text, graphs or charts and sound or movie clips. Students would research using Worldbook Advanced as a starting point, and use the related material and articles suggested with the results to go deeper into the topic.
